Hyderabad Tourist Attractions
SIGHTSEEING IN HYDERABAD
Charminar: Charminar is the major historical landmark and signature of Hyderabad city. It has four graceful minarets that are located in old city. It is built by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah in 1591 as a memorial. The original Charminar was a huge construction in wood representing the tomb of the Muslim saint Imam Hussain used as charm to safeguard the city against the outbreak of cholera in the late 16th century. When the epidemic subsided, the Charminar was rebuilt in stone and mortar at the same place where the original structure was built. The remarkable architecture was built under the supervision of Engineers and Architects of Arabia, Turkey, Persia and India. This historical monument is said to be the heart of the city. It is believed that Hyderabad was developed around this monument later. Most of the fabled bazaars of Hyderabad are located here including famous Lad Bazaar that in known for colorful stone bangles and other exclusive boutiques.
Golconda Fort: Golconda Fort is one of the most magnificent fortress complexes in India. This legendary fort once famous for its diamond market was the capital of the Qutub Shahi kings who ruled the surrounding territories from 1518 A.D to 1687 A.D.
This fortress has 87 bastions, and 8 colossal gateways over 69ft. high which could withstand even elephants battering. Above all it is famous for its brilliant architectural and engineering marvels, where a clap at the entrance can be heard at the highest point of the fort. Do not miss the sound and light show in the evening at 7 pm daily to enjoy the interesting historical narrations about this magnificent fort.
Mecca Masjid / Makkah Masjid: It is a symbolic mosque that was built 400 years back during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Qutub Shah, the 6th Qutub Shahi Sultan of Hyderabad. The three arched facades have been carved from a single piece of granite, which took five years to quarry. More than 8,000 workers were employed to build the mosque. Muhammed Qutub Shah personally laid the foundation stone of the ‘mosque’. The mosque can accommodate nearly 10,000 people to offer prayers at a time. Legend has it that some bricks brought from Mecca were used in the construction of the central arch of this mosque. Peoples from all faiths visit this place because of its historical importance and beautiful architecture. It is located 100 meters away from Charminar.
Qutb Shahi Tombs: The oldest historical monuments in Hyderabad reflecting the architectural beauty of the erstwhile kingdom are the regal resting places of the Qutb Shahi dynasty.
Taramati Baradari: This stately 17th century pavilion used to reverberate with music and dance whenever Taramati, the beautiful courtesan of the last king of Golconda entertained. It is located about a mile from Golconda fort this double storied square shaped structure with 12 arches, stands in splendid isolation on a hillock. The monument is now the centre piece of fabulous Tourist Complex, which plays host to prestigious cultural events. This culture complex has state of art conference facilities, a 1500 seat open air amphitheater, swimming pool, a restaurant and bar and a luxurious hotel. This historic site with pleasing landscapes and comprehensive facilities simply enthralls.
Falaknuma Palace: As the name suggests, this palace touches the stars, literally. This magnificent palace was constructed by Nawab Vikar-ul-Umra Bahadur on top of a 650 meter high hill. It housed most expensive art objects, tapestries and carpets, in addition to the largest single-man collection of diamonds. The Nizams had received their distinguished guests as late King George V and King Edward VIII of England at this very palace. This palace is also known as mirror of the city. It has now been undertaken by Taj group to develop this as Heritage Hotel.
Salarjung Museum: This is one of the biggest one man collections of antiques in the world. It displays around 35,000 antiques and art objects collected by Nawab Laser Jung III, Prime Minister to the Nizam of Hyderabad. On display are the rarest antiques, breathtaking collection of paintings, porcelain, jewelry, carpets, weapons, howdahs, fabrics, sculpture, ancient manuscripts, toys, clocks, and many other artifacts besides beautiful European and Indian paintings. The most important exhibits are Turban & Ivory chairs of Tipu Sultan, Aurangazeb’s diamond studded sword, Daggers of Emperor Jahangir, Shah Jahan, veiled statues of Rebecca and Margaret Mephistopheles. One day is not enough to cover the entire museum. Apart from galleries, there is a reference Library, reading room, publication and education section, chemical conservation lab, sales counter, cafeteria etc.
Birla Mandir: A temple dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara sits on the Hill top of Kalapahad, overlooking Hussain Sagar Lake and Hyderabad city. The architecture is an amalgamation of North and South Indian styles of Temple architecture. It is a monument of grandeur and magnificence in marble.
Ramoji Film City (RFC): The Ramoji Film City is located about 35 kilometers from the Hyderabad city. It is the world’s largest integrated film studio cum theme park, situated at nearly 3,000 acres (8 km²) of land. It is also one of Asia’s most popular tourism and recreation centers. Recently, it has made its way to the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest film studio in the world. It was inaugurated in 1996. It is a dream world that consists magnificent and incredible movie sets created for film making, Ramoji Film City offers facilities to produce any kind of movie. While roaming this film city, you will feel as if you have entered a new city with hills, gardens, lakes, and at the same time flanked with spotless modern buildings.
Husain Sagar Lake: It is a 24 kilometers long artificial lake in the middle of the city constructed by Ibrahim Qutub Shah in 1562 AD to meet the water requirements of the residents. This lake joins the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It is a favorite evening meeting place with a promenade, boating and parasailing facilities. The huge 72ft Buddha statue in the middle of the lake is the tall standing monolith in the island. There are boats available to ferry tourists across the lake to the island.
Nehru Zoological Park: This zoo is a natural habitat housing a large variety of animals, birds, nocturnal species, aquatic and amphibians. It is located close to the Mir Alam Sagar, which is proposed to be converted into an Aquarium along the lines of Sentosa, Singapore. Its unique feature is the 21 in-built masonry dams that are jewel shaped, which were built in 1804 by Henry Russle, a French engineer in British service. A jeep safari takes you to the Lion Park, unique in Asia. There is also a Natural History Museum and a Nocturnal Birds’ park.
Botanical Gardens: Botanical Gardens are first of its kind of gardens in the state, sprawling over 120 Acres and divided into sections such as medicinal plants, timber trees, fruit trees, ornamental plants, aquatic plants and bamboo trees.
NTR Gardens: A Leisure and entertainment center adjoining the Hussain Sagar Lake, beside the IMAX theatre is an exemplary peace of architecture which offers a serene atmosphere and provides a host of recreation facilities. It also houses a memorial of Late Shri N.T.Rama Rao, former Chief Minister. It is renowned for its creative design which includes tree-top restaurants and architecture. A mono rail system takes children around the garden. It is an amusement park with a difference.
